94% of CEOs believe this ...

I've been thinking a lot about AI lately.

Specifically, I'm stuck on the ethical parts and pieces around the usage of AI to replace human thought.

As an Carnegie Mellon undergrad, I double-majored in engineering and public policy. Ethics and technology were front and center.

We analyzed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in detail, discussing how engineering leaders were ignored as NASA managers were anxious to launch. We talked through the Ford Pinto cost-benefit analysis: the company determined that a $11/vehicle fix wasn't cost effective and knowingly put people's lives at risk.

I was in MBA school during the Enron scandal, and we spent a lot of time analyzing how executives inflated profits to drive stock prices up.

In each of these cases, leaders decided to put money before people.

Bill Gates has said that people can "retire early" when AI takes over their jobs, without discussing that the majority of Americans don't have a guaranteed retirement plan and need to work to pay the bills. Duolingo has shared that their plan to move to an "AI-first" company as a way to drive growth.

Then there's this study from Dataiku sharing how 500 global CEOs feel about AI:

It's amazing to me that 89% of CEOs believe that AI can develop a better strategic plan than a member of their leadership team and 94% believe that it can give better strategy than a human board member. If CEOs feel this way about their executive team members, then I can only imagine how they feel about the rest of their teams. Maybe I'm naive or old school, but I don't get how AI will ever replace human experience, wisdom, and discernment in strategic decision-making.

I'm just getting started in experimenting with AI, but I just don't see it.

The thing is, the pressure to use AI is on. 79% of the US CEOs surveyed believe that they could lose their jobs within 2 years if they don't deliver real impact with AI.

There's this constant drive to make a buck and we're not talking about what is going to happen to the people that are left behind.

I'll leave you with this: Pope Leo XIV has said that AI is one of the biggest issues that he plans to address. With everything going on in the world, he made it a point to discuss the ethics and impacts that AI will have on society. This should make all of us pause.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts here. Reply to this email and let me know what you're thinking about where AI is going in relation to your work and career outlook.

Question of the week

I am having trouble customizing my resume with 20+ years of experience. Do I only include jobs that match the opportunity- and then add that a full work history is available on request? Do I take off the years that I worked on past jobs? I believe I am a victim of ageism. I have so many talents and I am not over pricing my salary...but I am struggling with the resume/my age/getting past the AI screening. Can you please cover these topics in your newsletter? Thanks in advance. PS I do not feel old but the job search seems to indicate otherwise;)

The answer is: it depends.

You want your resume to tell your career story in an understandable, straightforward manner, so just including the jobs that match the opportunity isn't the best path to go. I'm OK with you including years work through the past 15-20 years or so - then I would summarize your past, relevant experience at the end of your resume without years.

I took a quick look at your LinkedIn profile - I would remove your date of graduation from your undergraduate degree to prevent ageism. I would also use your About section to discuss relevant past experience (especially since right now, you are only showing 10 years of experience in LinkedIn).

In case you missed these LinkedIn posts:
