A different time
I watched a few "All in the Family" reruns with my Gen Z kids last night - it felt like a history lesson in some ways. 1971 was a very different time - it wasn't just the bell bottoms, patterns, and hairstyles - it was the rotary phones, printed newspapers, and a very different way information moved through the world.
As we were talking, I found these high school newspapers from 1990 - I was the Business Manager for our paper back when we still used exacto knives to physically lay out each issue before it went to print. My kids’ high school produces online content now - video, podcasts, digital stories - leveraging technology in ways that didn’t exist when I was their age. Same purpose. Completely different tools.
If you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond, you've lived through a lot of change over the past decades. Like many people, you may be trying to figure out where you fit into this new world. As we wind down 2025 and think about 2026, this is certainly on my mind.
The theme that I keep coming back to is visibility. Back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, we accomplished visibility in a different way - typically by showing up in a traditional office. Today's online world allows us to connect with people and get our message out there on a broader scale, which can feel great and intimidating all at the same time.
Whether we like it or not, becoming more visible online will make all the difference in 2026. I’ll be sharing more in January about new ways I’m helping experienced professionals increase visibility and momentum on LinkedIn.
