Forever young
If you've been following me for awhile, you know that I love a good poll.
I've been using LinkedIn polls regularly for the past several years as a way to gauge the market and see how people are really feeling.
Sometimes, I'll run a poll once and then re-run within a year to see how things have changed.
In 2023, I ran a poll asking folks when they planned to retire - the results of that poll are here.
I decided to change the poll up last year and give an option around never fully retiring - you can see that poll here.
As I write this, 24% of respondents say that they don't plan to retire. Some folks plan to stay working as a way to stay current and active. I'm one of those folks - I love that work that I do and the clients that I work with. I don't know that I'll be working full-time when I'm in my 70s and 80s, but as long as I'm healthy enough to contribute, I see myself working in some capacity.
What struck me most in running the poll this time, though, was the number of people who commented that there should be another option for those that won't ever be able to afford to retire. This feels like a brewing storm that we aren't really talking about. With ageism being where it is, and the job market not being quite as hot as advertised, it feels to me like we're heading towards a really tough situation where we have lots of folks who NEED to work, but not enough jobs to go around.
I'm going to brainstorm what I can personally do to help to drive awareness (and hopefully change) here. If you have any thoughts or ideas, or just insights on where the economy and job market are going, I'd love to hear from you! Feel free to respond to this email and let me know what's on your mind.
Upcoming events:
I'm heading to SHRM25 in San Diego in 2 weeks - I'll be talking about "Silver Tsunami Success" with Claire Casey (President of the AARP Foundation) and Andy Ortiz (SVP & Chief Human Resources Officer, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) as a part of the Executive Network Experience - let me know if you'll be there too!
Question of the week
What's an executive bio and why would I need one?
An executive bio is a one-page document that outlines your unique value proposition. It’s typically written as a third-person story about your work experience and highlights key results, board contributions, and educational background. Some executive bio formats are more formal, and others are more casual. Whichever format you use, you’re looking to tell your story in a concise, easy-to-read way.
There are several reasons why you might need an executive bio which include seeking a board seat or positioning yourself as a thought leader in your industry. I wrote at length about executive bios for Ivy Exec a few years back - here is the article if you'd like to read more.
