Landslide

I've been quieter than usual this summer so I just wanted to check in.

I've always been someone who likes a good plan. Life has reminded me this summer that it doesn't always cooperate.

Thank you for continuing to be here.

I'll be back soon with more executive job search advice and client stories. Until then, I hope you're finding a little time to enjoy the rest of the summer and take care of the people who matter most - including yourself.

Question of the week

Hi Colleen - I’ve had a few jobs recently that were relatively short tenure for a variety of reasons and I think that is hurting my job prospects. Thoughts on how to address?

This is such a common theme right now.

The job market has been so volatile in the past few years. Combine this with the growth in contract roles and many of us have found ourselves in a place where we've switched roles/companies several times within a short period of time. From what I am seeing, this isn't viewed as the strong negative that it was 25+ years ago.

On your resume, you can consider a few different strategies for how to show continuity through times of change. If all of these roles were contract positions, you could consider putting them all under a common umbrella such as "Contract Projects" or "Consulting Roles." I don't typically discuss reasons for leaving roles on a resume, but if you are particularly concerned, you could share this (i.e. "Company was sold to XYZ Corporation in 2023 and left due to reorganization.")

I think the biggest thing is for you to not lose confidence and to feel prepared to discuss this in an interview. Prepare your story and rehearse it so that you are ready to share. Try to focus on the positives (i.e. "I learned a lot about product ownership during those roles and I'm ready to share those learnings with your organization."). Put together a case for how these moves will help future employers and turn this into something that actually benefits the employer and you should see this become less of an issue.

Take care of yourself and have a wonderful weekend!
