I had planned to be out of the office last week.
It was spring break for my 3 younger kids, so we had planned an 8-night, 3-city tour through Montreal, Quebec City, and New York City.
I was scheduled to talk with LinkedIn's Andrew Seaman on his Get Hired podcast at the Empire State Building about how to fight ageism in the job search. We were supposed to celebrate my son's 18th birthday and take my daughter to her first Broadway show.
However, on our first full day away, we found out that my husband's sister had died unexpectedly - she was only 41.
It's a lot to deal with, honestly.
There's a sadness about what could have been, although I know that she's in a better place.
As I write this, I'm still catching up. I'm sure you know the feeling - just trying to get back in the game. I often tell my clients to give themselves grace when things don't go as planned, so I'm trying to take my own advice here.
What honestly surprised me a little bit is how thoughtful and understanding people have been throughout the whole situation. I didn't expect my non-refundable rooms and tickets to be refunded, but most vendors did so without a problem. I've had to cancel some calls with potential clients and move things around (which I rarely do), but I figured out that it's ok to be human and let people know what's going on. Most people understand, and if they don't, then they probably aren't your people.
In the midst of all of this, we had some surprise good news yesterday (my son got into his first choice college - Virginia Tech). He'll be joining his sister there next year and we couldn't be happier.
Life is short, friends - give your loved ones a hug and let them know that you love them.
